There are lots of factors to consider when thinking about installing your solar system for Darwin. You’ll want to make sure your solar system is tough enough to withstand the harsh weather and can also perform throughout the year and each season.

Darwin is one of the most booming cities in Australia for solar power. With high energy use and high energy costs, more families are deciding to install solar. There are plenty of government rebates and incentives making it the most affordable and best investment you can make on your property

Here are some tips to get you started thinking about installing a solar system for your property

Table of contents:

  1. Do your research and ask questions!

2. Find a reputable installer

There are a lot of solar installation companies out there, but not all of them are qualified to install quality solar for Darwin homes. Make sure you find a reputable installer who has experience installing solar systems in the Darwin area. This will ensure that your system is installed correctly and performs to its fullest potential. 3. Consider the amount of energy your family uses

Before deciding on a solar system, it’s important to consider how much energy your family actually uses. As the feed-in tariff isn’t all that great (purchase energy from Jacana at $0.26 p/kWh, sell your energy at $0.08 p/kWh) the main aim is to use as much of your energy as possible. The best way to find this out is to gather the last 4 quarterly bills (this will give you an idea of your yearly production) and look at how much energy your property consumes throughout each Darwin season.

Typically, Darwin families use on average around 50-80kWh of energy per day (that’s $13 – $20 each day of energy), so you’ll want to get a system that can produce slightly more energy than you consume. If you are planning on getting a battery installed, then you will want a solar system that can produce ~25% more power than you typically need, allowing the extra energy to be stored for later use.

4. Install a solar battery

If you’re looking to get the most out of your solar system, then you should consider getting a solar battery installed. Solar batteries act as a storage unit for the excess energy that your solar panels produce, meaning that you can use this energy at night or during a power outage. Solar batteries typically can be quite expensive but with all the government rebates and grants, the price can be very affordable (ask us for a quote to find out!).

5. Future proof your solar system

When installing a solar system, it’s important to consider the future and how your needs may change. For example, if you’re planning on having children in the next few years, then you’ll need to make sure that your solar system is big enough to accommodate for their electricity usage.

It’s not just about how much energy you need right at this moment, but also about future proofing your property, are you planning on installing a bigger pool pump, more air conditioners, an out-house etc?  All of these will need to be considered when sizing your solar system.
